The accident happened at around 9.30pm on The Highway, Great Staughton on Wednesday, May 9.

An eye-witness described one car speeding too fast round the sharp bend on the road and crashing into an oncoming vehicle.

The two cars involved were a black Ford Focus and a red Citroen AX. All three emergency services attended the scene and a 50-year-old woman was taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital with chest injuries.

Parish councillor Geoff Gilbert, who owns a butcher's shop near to the scene, thought the accident could be partly due to the road conditions.

He said: "It's happened before on that bend when we've had these long dry spells. You get all sorts of debris and diesel on the road. Then as soon as you get some rain it's like a skid pan."

Cllr Gilbert thought the reported speeding was another likely cause of the smash.

He said: "Someone who actually saw the crash said one car was coming far too fast.

"They've put up the barriers on the corner and we've got a 30 miles per hour limit, so there's not much more you can do.

"People just need to drive more sensibly."
