Nature reserve future unveilled
The future of Paxton Pits Nature Reserve was unveiled on Friday (June 6) when wildlife lovers were given their first look at the full extent of the expansion project.
Former chief executive of the Environment Agency Baroness Young of Old Scone gave an address as
Friends of Paxton Pits and members of the Environment Agency, Huntingdonshire District Council and quarry operators Bardon Aggregates
gathered for the reserve's 20th birthday to view the new lakes.
The reserve is set to grow to more than three and a half times its current size, covering more than 700 acres.
It will encompass at least five new hides spread across five new lakes, a larger visitors centre, better parking and a 8.4 kilometre cycle track.
MP for Huntingdon Jonathan Djanogly also attended. He said: "This is something we can all be proud of and it is just the beginning of a 10 year project, which will not only put in place different habitats but give people a new understanding about wildlife and the environment.
"I know that work is already underway to get schools involved and I understand the Friends of Paxton Pits is one of the largest organisations of its kind in the country and do an amazing amount of work."
