A hazardous substances unit was called to a fire at an industrial estate in Great Paxton yesterday (March 25).
At 12.45pm, the unit and two crews from St Neots were called to a fire in a machine at Titan Motor Sports, Harley Industrial Estates, Paxton Hill, Great Paxton.

Firefighters discovered the blaze was a in a milling machine, which is used to make racing car wheels.

Magnesium is involved in the process and reacts violently to water, so firefighters had to use alternative methods to extinguish the fire.

Staff from the company had already attempted to put the fire out using a dry powder extinguisher.

Firefighters completed the task by smothering the fire with sand.

Crews returned to base by 1.25pm.

The cause of the fire was accidental.
