Delays on A1 after car fire

17.10, May 9, 5pm:
The northbound carriageway of the A1 has re-opened after both carriageways were shut this afternoon.
15.25: The A1 at Wyboston has been shut in both directions due to a car fire.

The emergency services are currently at the scene of the crash and are trying to make safe two bottles of propane gas that were in the vehicle.

It is believed that the occupant escaped unharmed.

Traffic is being diverted along the A428 and is reported to to be very heavy in the area.

The police, who were initially called at 2.25pm this afternoon (Friday), have said they do not know when the road will reopen, but the Highways Agency have said they expect normal traffic conditions by 5pm.

15.20pm: An accident has led to the closure of the A1 in both directions this afternoon.

The road is shut between the junctions with the A428 and the A421.
