A state-of-the-art £5.1 million teaching block opened today has made a St Neots college one of the best in the county.
Those were the words of Cambridgeshire's Lord Lieutenant Hugh Duberly as he performed the opening ceremony at Longsands College.
The new building, which was started in June 2007 and completed last month, provides another 28 classrooms for the teaching of English, mathematics and geography.

It also incorporates a drama studio, departmental offices and a seminar space.
At the opening ceremony on Friday morning (September 12), college principal Robert Whatmough said: "The whole process has been wonderful and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the project, from the staff and pupils to the designers Mouchel and builders RG Carter."

Local leaders and other invited guests were joined by staff and pupils for the opening ceremony, which was introduced by Cambridgeshire County Council chairman Tony Orgee.
Mr Orgee said: "It is a magnificent new environment for learning and I would like to extend my thanks, on behalf of the council, to both the builders and the architects."
Hugh Duberly unveiled a plaque to commemorate the opening of the new block.

He said: "I would like to congratulate all those involved, because the new teaching block is something that everyone associated with the school can be proud of.
"St Neots is due to expand significantly in the future, and in my opinion this new addition makes Longsands one of the best equipped schools in Cambridgeshire. It feels like when you buy a new piece of furniture for your home – suddenly everything else looks a bit paltry!"
As well as the additional teaching facilities that have been built, the new block also benefits from a new social area and landscaping to integrate the new building into the existing site.

To complete the ceremony, county council Cabinet member for learning, Cllr David Harty, handed over the keys of the new building to Ruth Chapman, chairwoman of the governors at Longsands College.
Mrs Chapman said: "I have been a governor at the college since 1976 and the new block really is absolutely wonderful."

Principal Robert Whatmough added: "The opening of this facility marks a significant development in the history of Longsands College.
"We are delighted that our provision for direct learning and sixth form private study has taken this major step forward. We are also grateful to Tony Orgee, Lord Lieutenant Duberly and Cambridgeshire County Council, for their ongoing support."
