St Ives RFC 60
Thorney 8
A storming victory was in store for St Ives when visitors from Thorney arrived with a mixed veteran side on Saturday.
Despite the travelling team overflowing with experience, St Ives' combination of level headed senior moments and the fast feet of some youth in the back line led to a storming 60-8 victory.
Thorney spent the first 15 minutes camped on the Bulls try line with only a penalty to show for it. However Jez Clarke was first to cross the line for St Ives after a unselfish pass from "Captain Jack" Blackley.

The Drake brothers then combined to score under the posts, Michael passing to Gareth after charging down a failed clearance from the Thorney fullback. Next a 60-yard dash from fullback Paul Ashbridge put stalwart backrow Jason Price under the posts.

Then St Ives forced an error in the scrum, veteran scrum-half Lee Jackson reacting quickly to kick through and score. Thorney replied quickly in the second half, with continued pressure leading to a try in the corner by Gavin Hammond from a quick penalty, St Ives' defence caught napping after a scrum infringement.

A succession of tries from the Bulls soon ramped up the scoreboard, including Gareth "Turkeywing" Drake completing his hat-trick after chasing his own kick, a crash over the line by Tommy Newman from a penalty, and a run in under the posts from Lee Jackson after a one-handed pass from stout flanker Pete Hammond.

A match highlight was the final try of the game, lock Steve Plum rolling back the years to score under the posts after a 60-yard run down the wing.

Credit must also go to Jez Clarke with two tries and a record five passes.

>> St Ives RFC are currently looking for frontrow players for their senior teams. If you are interested, please contact the club on 01480 464455 - all ages, sizes, and levels of experience welcome.
