St Neots will have a Christmas lights display despite last year's disaster.
There had been fears that the lights would not be put up this December following an accident in the High Street in 2007, when one of the cross street displays collapsed onto the road injuring two women.

In the wake of the disaster a dispute arose between St Neots Town Council and lighting specialists Millennium Quest, who refused to end the contract that had been agreed between the two parties.

But the council has now revealed that it has cut ties with the Kent-based lighting firm and that this year's display will definitely be going ahead.

In a statement the council said: "The Town Council can confirm that there will be Christmas lights for 2008, with a switch on ceremony scheduled for Friday, November 28.

"There had been some doubt about the arrangements following an accident in the High Street in 2007. However, the council has now terminated the contract with its previous contractors, has purchased lights and will arrange for them to be put up through a local company this year."

Council leader Derek Giles welcomed the news, particularly given the town's history of putting on popular and successful switch on events in the past.

He said: "St Neots has a deserved reputation for both its lights and the switch on ceremony. I am delighted that they will be back for 2008 bigger and better than ever."

It is also hoped there will be a fair and stalls in the market square, together with a stage for local performers to entertain the crowd.
