It was a gorgeous day, the sun shone and the crowds came in their hundreds to celebrate the annual Eaton Socon May Day festival and the crowning of the new May Queen.
People of all ages attended the hugely popular event, organised by the Eatons Community Association and held on the village green.
Visitors were treated to a galaxy of entertainment, including traditional Maypole dancing, sweeps and milkmaids dances by Heartsease Folk dancers followed by the baton-twirling Majestic Majorettes, the Langdale Academy dance group and singing by the Riverside theatre group.
Feet-tapping music by local band Group Therapy, who sang and played well-known songs, was greatly appreciated by the enthusiastic crowd. There was also lots of audience participation in the jiving session with Sarah White's Jive Group.
Throngs of people browsed and bought goods from a variety of stalls, many of which represented various charities.
There was also plenty of raffles, tombola and games.
The warm weather and lots of youngsters encouraged a very long queue to form in front of the ice cream van and the smell of grilled burgers and onions was too delicious for many to resist.
The highlight of the celebrations was the crowning of the Eatons May Queen. Retiring May Queen, Rhiannon Turner, presented the crown – donated by florist Posy Bowl – and sash to new queen Leanne Hemming. The two princesses, Samantha Mason and Melissa Yeoman, were presented with tiaras and sashes.
A necklace was presented to Rhiannon, donated by Johnson Jewellers.
Colin Jackson, who has helped the Eatons Association since it began 29 years ago, was presented with the Eatons Community Cup by last year's winner Chris McKay.
A special award was given to Ron and Peg Barringer, who have polished the poles and ironed the flags for the Union Jacks on the Eaton Socon War Memorial for many years on Remembrance Sunday.
Chairman of the community association Sue Jarrett said: "The event went fantastically well and people really enjoyed themselves. We are pleased to see so many groups involved with this community event and we are all looking forward to next year when the association will be 30 years old."
Mrs Jarrett added that the association would like to thank Jean Searle for her dedication in making the dresses for 29 years and all those businesses, individuals and volunteers – too numerous to mention here – who contributed so magnificently in many ways in making the Eatons May Day celebrations such a rip-roaring success.
