Police crackdown in town is seeing results says councillor

A councillor believes that a police crackdown is helping to reduce the problems of rowdy behaviour and speeding in Ramsey.
Following a Ramsey Neighbourhood Panel meeting police have increased arrests for anti-social behaviour, improved their response times and issued 15 drivers with speeding tickets in recent weeks.
Ramsey parish councillor Ray Powell is pleased about the increased police presence, but believes there is still work to be done to completely stamp out the problems.
He said: "The police have been coming down hard on anti-social behaviour and speeding, and in my opinion they've been doing a good job. The problem of speeding has increased over the years, particularly among young people, and it's just not acceptable.
"Ramsey also has a big problem with anti-social behaviour, especially in Great Whyte, and again it's not acceptable. It seems to have got worse since the introduction of late licences - I am on the Licensing and Protection Panel and we have complaints all the time about people's drinking."
At a Neighbourhood Panel meeting in June residents and police agreed to give priority to two nuisance areas - youth-related anti-social behaviour and speeding.
And since then patrols have been made at weekends to try to tackle the problems caused by rowdy youths, and these have been followed up with arrests and reassurance beats. Officers have also been visiting pubs to support landlords and - as well as issuing speeding tickets - have given verbal warnings to people driving irresponsibly.
Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant for the Ramsey and District area Laura Taylor said: "The team has been working hard to tackle the issues raised by residents. The team has also attended summer events, carried out plain clothes patrols in Great Whyte and executed warrants.
"The more residents who come to the meetings, the better, as it really helps us to tackle the problems which matter most to the public."
Patrols have also been conducted in relation to youth anti-social behaviour in Warboys, and Guardian Awareness Programme letters have been written to parents to inform them of their child's behaviour.
