Footballers in the Alconburys and surrounding district were celebrating this week following a £286,000 award by the Football Foundation.
The cash bonanza from the UK's largest sporting charity will allow Alconbury Sports and Social Club and the Alconbury Recreation Field Charity to acquire additional land and develop its facilities with a floodlit, state of the art third generation multi-use games area and additional grass pitches.

The redevelopment will also enable the club's existing changing rooms to be upgraded, including new facilities for the disabled.

Chair of trustees for the Alconbury Recreation Field Charity Professor Bob Berrington said: "This new all weather floodlit development provides a fantastic opportunity for football in the Alconburys and surrounding area.

"It will enable the charity to meet a popular demand from children, young people and adults to participate using our expanded modern facilities at the Alconbury Sports and Social Club."

Professor Berrington also thanked the other local partners that have been involved in the project.

He added: "Alongside this major investment from The Football Foundation, the project has also been supported generously by WREN who have provided a £20,000 grant towards the changing room and disabled facilities, the Huntingdonshire District Council, Alconbury Parish Council, and the Garfield Weston Foundation."

The Football Foundation is funded by the Premier League, The Football Association, Sport England and the Government.

It is the nation's largest sports charity with a £45m budget.
