Firefighters to pull engine through streets on Sunday
Firefighters will be flexing their muscles on Sunday (May 4) to pull a fire engine through the streets of St Neots for charity.
The great St Neots Fire Engine Pull will start at B&Q in Eaton Socon at 12.30pm and finish at the Cambridgeshire Hunter, Eynesbury.
Dressed in harnesses with ropes attached to the 12 tonne fire engine, the firefighters will drag the vehicle across a five-mile route around the streets of St Neots.
Spectators will be able to line up along the route, or gather at the finishing line at the Cambridgeshire Hunter, where a mini-fete will get into full swing once the pull is over.
Events held at the fete include a bouncy castle, disco, outside bar, raffle, bucking bronco, barbecue, karaoke and auction. A fire safety stand will be held, where members of the public can find out more about how to keep safe, both in the home and out on the roads. There will also be the chance to sign up for a free Home Fire Safety Check.
Vernon Paine, watch manager at St Neots Fire Station, said: "The St Neots Fire Engine Pull is now in its third year and we are very lucky that this annual event has always been very successful with the people of St Neots.
"This is a chance to meet your local firefighters, and also to raise money for a fantastic cause. Last year we raised a total of £10,000 for the Burned Children's Club summer camp and this year we hope to raise this figure even further."
The Burned Children's Club Summer Camp is the social event of the year for young burns survivors. It is held at Grafham Water each summer and helps children build their self-esteem and come to terms with their altered body image. Support is also available for parents and siblings.
The St Neots firefighters are also actively involved in the summer camp. Each year, along with other Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service personnel, they organise a water-related fun day, which is popular with many of the young people.
