In a bid to reduce the harm caused by excessive drinking by young people across Cambridgeshire, agencies have joined forces to develop a new alcohol abuse strategy.
The Cambridgeshire Alcohol Strategy 2008-2011 brings together relevant organisations and sets out a multi-agency approach to reducing the harm caused by alcohol to individuals, families and communities.

Some of the problems the new initiative is aiming to tackle include health, homelessness, domestic abuse and teenage pregnancy.

The strategy was developed by the Cambridgeshire County Council's Drug and Alcohol Action Team working alongside Cambridgeshire Trading Standards, the Personal, Social and Health Education Service, Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trust and Cambridgeshire Police.

County council head of participation services Tom Jefford said: "This project aims to provide countywide co-ordination in all areas of alcohol work to ensure that partners are working together to implement the strategy in order to deliver a range of activities specifically aimed at reducing alcohol-related harm amongst young people in Cambridgeshire."

The Cambridgeshire Alcohol Strategy is expected to be implemented from September and it will be led by the County Drug and Alcohol Action Team which is part of the county council.
