Dragons line up for weekend of riverside fun and festivities
The St Ives Riverside Gala is paddling its way back to the town this month with a whole weekend of thrills – and no doubt spills.
The programme kicks off next Saturday (July 12) with a special concert at the town's free church.
And the main event starts the weekend after on Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20 at Nobles Field.
Entrance to this colourful event is free and features all the excitement of a regatta together with the thrills of the dragon boat racers.
Saturday promises a great day out for the family with all the fun of the fair and the excitement of small river racing.
The St Ives Rowing Club has invited teams from across the area, who will compete from 10am throughout the day.
St Ives and Isle of Ely rowing clubs were neck and neck in the prizes in 2007.
Sunday sees the dragons return with 21 teams from local businesses all determined to win the coveted trophy cheered on by the excited supporters.
Last year's dragon boat trophy went to a team from the St Ivo gym and their friends, followed by the Seven Wives pub and Anglia Dragons from Anglia Circuits – all will be defending their titles.
Music starts at midday on Saturday with popular local bands led by the sensational Arco Iris Brazilian drumming band. Arco Iris will begin in the town centre, march down to the quay and travel to Nobles Field by electric river boat.
Visitors to the event will find plenty of food and refreshments available, from a hog roast to ice creams, and the popular beer tent.
There'll be stalls selling a wide variety of goods and crafts, a pirate activity ship hosting children's entertainment area, a balloon race, climbing wall and face painting.
Magic Steve is making his first appearance at the gala with a show to delight the youngsters from magic to circus skills.
A pirate-themed river taxi will be available between St Ives Quay and Nobles Field, so there's no excuse not to get on the water.
The gala, now in its third year, is backed by the St Ives Town Initiative in association with the St Ives Rowing Club, who wish to thank the major sponsor St Ives Town Council.
