A Godmanchester couple's lives were saved thanks to an early morning wake-up call from their smoke alarm.
They managed to escape their smoke-logged first floor flat at the Old Court House and dial 999 thanks to the battery powered device.

Firefighters received the call at around 6am on Monday where they discovered a candle which had been left unattended on an electric heater.

A fire had not broken out but the area was left smoke logged.

Watch manager at Huntingdon Rob Allport said: "The couple living in the flat had been woken up by their smoke alarm to find the flat smoke logged. Luckily they had time to escape and dial 999.

"It is essential that all residents have a working smoke alarm. This is vital to protect themselves, their families and property from fire."
