What is the price of Art? 200,000 francs to be precise
Would you pay 200,000 francs for a blank canvass? This will be the question on every audience member's lips when multi-award winning theatre show Art visits Huntingdon this month.
The West End comedy on modern art is touring village halls across the country, and will be making a Friday night stop at the Commemoration Hall on Huntingdon High Street.
The play was written by Yasmina Reza in 1994 as a tongue-in-cheek reaction to the ongoing public debate about the merits of modern art versus classic works.
At its heart, Art is a comedy about friendship. Set in Paris, amateur art investor Serge has just bought a work by renowned artist Antrios which he proudly displays to his two best friends.
The painting is large, five foot by four. It is expensive, worth 200,000 francs. And it is completely white, though Antrios asserts there are a series of white scars on the white background.
His friends get drawn into an increasingly personal argument over his outrageous purchase, on whether it is art or an utterly worthless eyesore.
By the end of the play their very friendship is on the brink of falling apart, but their bond is re-affirmed by an act of artistic vandalism, or creativity, depending on their personal opinion.
>> The play will be hitting Huntingdon on Friday, April 25, at 7.30pm. Tickets are £12 and £10 and are available from the Card Gallery, High Street, Huntingdon, call 01480 455167 or online at www.cremm.co.uk
