Last week I wrote to leader of Cambridgeshire County Council Jill Tuck regarding the traffic flow problems on the east side of the Huntingdon ring road.
In my correspondence, I stated that the traffic flows from Godmanchester Bridge to Brampton and the A1 had improved greatly at rush hours, since the George Hotel rat-running issue was highlighted by myself and the traffic light timings were altered.
However, we now need to get the rest of the ring road moving more freely.

We are aware of increased traffic flows at peak periods but the traffic light timings all need to be tweaked to keep this traffic free flowing.
This is from the Guided Bus lane traffic lights and pedestrian lights controlled crossing on the Ermine Street side of George Street.
Traffic is often held up even when there is no sign of a bus at this junction.

In addition, the pedestrian crossing stops traffic for far too long, causing tremendous backlogs through to Brampton and Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

The lights at Ermine Street, Cowper Road, Sainsburys, Hartford Road/ATS junction, Hartford Road Luminus junction and the Godmanchester bridge junction all need to be co-ordinated.
In addition to this, I have sought for the installation of box junctions at Cowper Road lights and Sainsbury Road lights to help prevent vehicles jamming the ring road or the junction when the lights change, leaving vehicles stranded across the junctions.
I am fully supported by my county council colleague Colin Hyams in this.

We believe that the traffic congestion will be eased for everyone in Huntingdon and Godmanchester keeping through traffic flowing more freely.
We are awaiting a response from county council and hope to meet up with officers shortly to get the ball rolling and the traffic moving.

Carnival thanks
The members of the Ramsey Carnival Committee would like to thank all those who supported the carnival.
The local traders – including Lloyds chemist, Lasting Impressions, Barnets and Crafty Ideas – generously gave donations for the raffle.
It was well supported by the local population although the weather was not at its best.
We are hoping to repeat the carnival in 2010.

Flower support was appreciated
The results may not be available for some time, but I would like to offer my personal thanks to every resident in Godmanchester who made an effort for our first entry to the Anglia in Bloom Competition.
Every effort, big or small, has made a difference and the result has been fantastic.

Thanks should also go to residents of McCartney House and Muir Housing, Rectory Gardens and Luminus Group, our grounds maintenance contractors Fergusons, Huntingdonshire District Council – in particular Paul Smith, Godmanchester Community Association, Godmanchester Community Primary School and St Anne's CofE Primary School, the youth group of St Mary the Virgin, entrants for the Best Kept Front Garden and Best Kept Allotment competitions and of course the Godmanchester In Bloom Committee.

The whole community has been able to enjoy the improvements made and regardless of the official result, I would like to say – well done Godmanchester!

Transport option
>> THE Transport Minister Ruth Kelly recently had the chance to ride on the first completed section of the Guided Busway.
When the busway is complete it will provide 20,000 passengers a day
with an alternative to using the car.

The Government has put forward more than £90 million of the funding and housing developers are paying £23 million.

From next spring people using the guided bus will be able to benefit from a regular, efficient and environmentally positive service. With the challenge provided by climate change and the rise in fuel prices, we all need to reconsider the way we travel. The new busway will give a positive new alternative.

Don't forget our pavements
>> OVER the last few months, the letters columns have had considerable input from local councillors puffing up their egos. Last week, and with a straight face, one local councillor (Derek Giles) announced that giving £4,000 to yet more consultants was good news for the St Neots cinema bid.
Is it possible that between writing to newspapers and talking to consultants, the Eaton Socon councillor could look at the state of the pavements, kerbs and general maintenance of the roads around the Honeydon Avenue area.
Is not this the humdrum work that councillors should be doing?
A cinema will depend on hard-nosed commercial decisions and the district council's approval.
In the meantime, what about our pavements?

Can town cope with borrowing?
>> I WOULD love to meet Cllr Derek Giles' scriptwriter, because I think he is brilliant.

One week his career sank like the Titanic, and this week he's something of a superstar.

What I want to know now is how is St Neots Town Council going to cope with borrowing money to buy land for a cemetery (£400,000) and for a communitiy centre (£350,000), and that's without the interest.
What has the council done with the rest of our hard earned money?
But I guess that will be covered up in part two of the meetings (where the press and public are excluded).
