A commemorative walk across a busy road where a teenager was killed almost a year ago has been cancelled as, ironically, the route has been deemed unsafe.
A march was planned for next Thursday (May 8) evening across the A141 in Huntingdon on the anniversary of the accident which killed 16-year-old Warren Hay.

As part of the campaign to see a traffic light crossing built across the road and a path and cycleway at either side of the crossing, the Warren Hay Road Safety Action Group was planning the march to raise awareness for the campaign.

Maxine Hay, Warren's mother, explained the march, which is following the route her son was taking when the fateful accident occurred, was also in remembrance of football-mad Warren.

She said: "The irony is the police said it was too dangerous. Because there is no crossing and because of the speed of the vehicles, even with the police involved it's a danger to pedestrians and vehicles, because of the knock-on effect once you bring everything to a halt.

"Everything we are doing is about safety, so we didn't want to jeopardise everything we are trying to do. But this has probably highlighted the dangers of that road even more.

"I am very disappointed that we couldn't do it, but we have to take on board what the police have said. When we have the crossing in place, and the proper footpath and cycleway, that's when we will do it. There will be no danger to anyone then."

Local authorities have said there is enough money to fund a crossing at the road, but are still looking at ways of paying for a footpath from the junction to Jubilee Park.
